Grow Garlic & Holiday Deals!
It’s garlic planting season again & Time for the Holidays!
It feels like just yesterday that I was planting my garlic last Fall and harvesting an absolute bounty of huge garlic heads this spring. In this months newsletter we go through the best tips and techniques I have learned to grow some bountiful and delicious homegrown garlic. I’ve also got some truly EPIC holiday deals for you to close out the 2023 growing season and get you prepped for 2024!
Earlier this year we released an Ultimate guide for growing garlic! Come along on our spring harvest, see the results and listen as I talk about EXACTLY what I did to grow some massive Garlic. Keep Scrolling as we break down all of these details step by step.
Picking the Right Varieties
Step One of growing amazing garlic is picking the right variety!
Hardneck and Softneck Varieties require different growing conditions and also have storage lengths after picking.
Hardneck is more tolerant to cold where as Softnecks prefer milder climates.
Hardneck varieties NEED a period of cold before it warms up for the bulbs to form. Winter is a good thing in this respect!
If you are growing garlic in an area that never receives a frost softeck varieties will be the best for you. You can also take advantage of a process called vernalization by placing your garlic in the refrigerator for about 1 month, at least, before planting to mimic winter and the coming of spring which is required for bulb production of hardneck varieties. Take a deeper dive into this article, written by Botanical Interests, on how to choose the right varieties and pick some up for your garden.
Planting
Now that you have the right varieties, it’s time to plant. I always amend my soil with a slow release high nitrogen fertilizer, Azomite and Compost to provide the nutrients garlic needs to grow large healthy bulbs.
Our Partners at GreenGro Biologicals have some amazing fertilizers that will blow you away with abundant growth. For Garlic I would recommend using Pride Lands Veg and Earthshine.
After adding some necessary nutrients and biologicals I like to plant my garlic about “thumb depth deep” (4 inches) and 6 inches apart. In my 30 inch wide raised beds I have had success planting 3 rows following this spacing.
Mulching
Mulching garlic, in my mind, is the most important step. Since your garlic is generally growing through the winter.
Applying a thick layer of leaves or other valuable mulch will keep the soil protected, help moderate and maintain temperature and retain moisture.
I recently discover a gardening hack that will be so valuable for many! Check out this reel to keep your garlic even more protected over the winter.
Water & Wait
You may be expecting some super secret watering strategy, and there isn’t one! Garlic is typically very drought tolerant and will grow well through the winter as long as you get the occasional rain and snow and keep your beds mulched.
As the weather warms in the spring, and if you tend to experience periods of drought, additional water might be required to help your bulbs form large and plump.
For now, enjoy the planting process and be patient knowing that by early summer you should be harvesting delicious and abundant homegrown garlic.
