january 2023
new year, new garden, New savings??

Happy New Year! We are going to start 2023 off with a bang! Getting back to the basics and getting you all growing better than ever.

This month’s video is Garden Vs Grocery… Is It Worth It? Meaning, is growing a garden cheaper than simply shopping at the grocery store?? Well…lets find out!

To make this video a success and worth while for all gardeners alike, I walk you through the creation of a brand new garden and break down ALL the costs to set it up for the first time and maintain it over the seasons. I show you the considerations and calculations, and compare the estimated yields to the prices we have been seeing at the grocery store. All to determine if it is indeed…worth it?!

You can watch the video above! The rest of this newsletter is going to contain all the information mentioned in the video for you to create this very same garden. Below you will find tables, videos and images of the garden we created so you can grow your own garden and supplement the amount of produces you purchase from the grocery store. This video is FILLED with so much great information.

Earth, Nails & Tails was created to provide inspiration and guidance through real experience, and allow more people to start gardening and homesteading in their own backyards. We pride ourselves on providing true and accurate information to get your garden growing abundantly! Follow and Subscribe on Instagram , YoutubeTikTok or Facebook for multiple weekly updates and start growing successfully today.

Getting started

The steps we laid out in the video to create the garden and estimate the costs are as follows:

  1. Create a garden with either raised beds or in ground beds
  2. Fill the garden with soil
  3. Purchase seeds or starts
  4. Fertilize your garden throughout the year
Each one of these contribute to the overall cost of growing a garden and your own produce. Below is a scale image of the garden we are going to make. 12, 10 foot x 2.5 foot garden beds.
300sqft Garden to Supplement a Family of 4

1. Build Your Garden

Here is a method of building some affordable yet durable wooden raised beds that can get you growing in no time. The garden we created in the video, utilizes 12 of these raised beds. Exactly the ones on the Earth, Nails & Tails Homestead!

To save on costs you can start your garden in ground like we mentioned in the video. IF you want more info on starting in ground beds be sure to let us know in the comments!

AND If you want to take your growing experience one step further, you can purchase some beautiful and extremely durable Birdies Raised beds!  Additionally, as an affiliate of Epic Gardening I am able to give you 5% OFF any Birdies Raised Bed order with my Code: Phil. Just apply it at checkout!

2. fill it with soil

Compost is a gardeners best friend, and I apply it to my garden every.. single.. year. I would ALWAYS recommend buying your soil in bulk from a reputable distributor. I have a small local company that will dump up to 10 yards of compost at once in my driveway for a fee of $40. And at around $40 a yard, I save up to 5x the amount if I were to buy bagged compost from a big box store… THATS HUGE! Simply google “mulch” or “top soil” or “bulk compost” and look around on the map to see if you can find a company that will get it to you.

Many people typically have questions as to calculate how much compost or soil they need. For the garden we created in the video, I showed you how to do all of those calculations but if you want to know how to do it yourself here is a reel we created to show how to do the calculation!

3. Get your plants

There are a few ways to get your plants growing for the upcoming season. Grow them from seed, purchase from a nursery or big box store or you can even ask a friend! Based off of your budget, goals and desires you can decide which option is best for you.

This table shows you all of the 20+ veggies that are growing in the 300sqft garden as well as the amount of area required to grow each one. You can also scroll back up to the image and see where each one is planted to grow this exact same garden yourself!

4. Fertilize

Last but certainly not least is fertilizing your garden, and this year I am happy to announce our amazing partnership with Dr. Earth! Dr. Earth is an reputable organic fertilizer company that focuses on sustainability, quality, and soil and microbiologial health to keep your plants growing strong.

You can find there products online and in the big box stores, and Dr. Earth actually recommends you shop at your favorite brick and mortar to purchase their products for the best prices.

I will be applying Dr. Earths’s Home Grown Fertilizer to my vegetable garden throughout the season and I recommend you do the same. There fertilizer is PACKED full of microbiology that helps your plants grow bigger and better than ever before.

Since this is a high quality, slow release fertilizer, you will only have to apply it, at most, once every other month throughout the season to grow your best garden yet.

Not only are you getting a quality product that your soil and plants will love, your pockets will love it too.  Having to fertilize less means saving more, and you will find yourself growing a better garden for less money vs using the leading competitors.

There are so many things that go into the creation of the garden and it was my goal this month to really break things down and provide you all the information to get started. Many people grow gardens to benefit their health and happiness and now we can figure out if it benefits our bank accounts as well.  I really hope you enjoyed all this information and I am excited to hear your feedback!
