May 2023 (Plant Perennials)

May 2023
Planting Perennials!

Over the past month it has been my focus to plant more perennials on the Homestead. This includes edible fruits and veggies, as well as native landscaping to bring in the beneficial native wildlife.

Planting perennials should really be at the forefront of your garden plan. Perennials get planted once, they grow large and will continue to come back for years to come. For these reasons it is really important to understand the impact that perennials have on your landscape and how they can significantly benefit you in the future!

One of the most exciting things I planted recently was citrus! As a gardener in zone 7b it can be difficult to grow much fruit at all. The seasons are warm, our soil is mostly clay and it still frosts so the choices are very limited. Luckily, the lemon and lime trees that I planted grow excellent in pots and can be brought indoors before the frost rolls around. If you have ever wanted to grow citrus, below is the info that you need to produce delicious tropical fruit in almost any zone!

Another one of my favorite edible perennial plants to grow is Asparagus. When planted properly it can grow for upwards of 15-30 years! AND it produces some of the most delicious fresh veggies you will ever get your hands on. Below is my Guide on how to plant and Grow Asparagus to grow delicious food for years to come.

Along with asparagus, we also planted more strawberries and a new addition of artichokes!

Regardless of what edible perennials you want to grow in your garden be sure to do research on what ones you can ACTUALLY grow in your area. You always want to do your best to have the conditions a plant needs in order for it to grow well and provide the result you expect.

One of the best ways to find out what you can grow successfully in your area is by contacting your local agriculture extension office (most towns or cities have one through their city halls) or local master gardeners program. They literally volunteer their time to make people better at gardening! Simply ask them what edible fruit and vegetables grow well where you live. (providing the necessary context) They might provoke you into planting some native plants as well which I would highly recommend.
