July 2023
DIY Days of Summer

Whether you have realized it or not, gardening and homesteading is all about Doing it Yourself (DIY) and everything we do or learn is to improve upon on our precious knowledge to create a better outcome. To be the best gardener or homesteader you have to be comfortable and confident learning new skills and applying them! What I am best at is building, tinkering and engineering, and I am happy to show you the best, and cheapest, rain barrel design I have been able to create to provide my garden and chickens with precious rainwater.

Below is my complete, Step-by-Step guide on how to build a rain barrel with an food grade drum.

Another place you need to be adept in DIY for gardening is when it comes to pruning, and I don’t know if there is a gardener out there that doesn’t grow tomatoes. Pruning is a DIY skill one should become familiar to have the most flexibility and success in their growing practices, and I have seen a lot of views or strategies that have been pushed on people for the most success. With that, I developed a tomato pruning video that dives into the principles of pruning tomatoes and gives you the tools you need to become a self thinking tomato pruner. Walking away you should have a better understanding of what each cut does and WHY you are making each and every cut. Viewers are saying it is “The best video about tomatoes!”

Another fun projected I completed this past month was a pond that I built for my chickens. The special thing about this build was that it recirculated the water from my rain barrel, into the pond and back where the water gets naturally filter by the ponds plants. Lillies, water Lettuce and hyacinth. I absolutely love the way it came out and it bring a nice focal point as well as a source of fresher water for the chickens.

See how we built it on our Instagram reel, and checkout our amazon store front HERE for all the items we used to make it happen.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to comment on the video on any of our social media platforms!

Another DIY update we provided was on our Stock Tank Pool! We built this pool one year ago and honestly it has held up extremely well, and has provided our family what we expected from it.

Lots of people have asked if we have plans for the build and I am happy to tell you that we do! and you can find them right HERE for free.

We are always creating more projects and DIY plans and continuing to populate our Projects Page.

Another way you can get into the DIY spirit this summer or fall is with our Premium DIY plans available on ETSY! We have received a lot of great feedback and customer satisfaction from these plans which utilize cedar fence pickets to create a sturdy and rot resistant wooden raised bed.

There are plans available for a 2’x6′ and 3’x6′ raised beds.
